Delos, by morning ferry

The UNESCO ancient city on the sacred islet half an hour off Mykonos, ranked just behind the Acropolis among Greece's archaeological sites. Catch the 9 a.m. boat from Mykonos Old Port; the whole island is the site, uninhabited now, with terraced houses, mosaic floors, the row of marble lions, an amphitheatre. Bring water, a hat, good shoes. You get two and a half hours before the last boat back at 2 p.m., and it's closed Mondays. The people who write it off as ruins are the ones who didn't go.
