Etna · guided volcano hike
The Cut· research-verified, not yet visited
Cable car from Rifugio Sapienza to 2,500 m, then a 4x4 bus higher, then a guided walk. Access above the cable car is zone-based, not altitude-based. The standing rules: the summit-crater zone may only be crossed with an authorised alpine or volcanological guide, in transit without stopping, and a 500-metre exclusion applies around the Sud-Est crater at all times (Ordinanza Sindacale n. 17 of 10 September 2025; checked July 2026). Separately, the civil-protection alert phase can change the same day: at PREALLARME the summit-crater zone closes, and at ALLARME the whole summit zone closes. Check the live status before you travel: the national alert level is published at rischi.protezionecivile.gov.it, and the mayors' ordinances at parcoetna.it. Your guide may shorten or cancel the walk on the day. The zone closes when civil protection raises the alert permitted). Half-day from Catania. Bring layers; even in July the summit drops below 10°C and the wind cuts.
