Polignano's gelato landmark at Piazza Garibaldi 22, the Campanella family operation, on Piazza Garibaldi for generations.
Giuseppe Campanella, an almond seller, began walking over from Conversano in 1935, settled here and sold "grattose" (flavoured grated ice) from a cart; the shop credits the grattose to Michele Campanella. His son Mario took over on Piazza Garibaldi, and the walls carry photographs the shop says are of Pippo Baudo, Gianni Morandi, Monica Vitti, Michele Placido and Lina Wertmüller. Order the Caffè Speciale, which Mario invented: coffee, cream, lemon zest and the shop's own almond amaretto. The almond (mandorla) gelato is the other order, Puglian almonds, and this is the place to taste them.
