A 12th-century castle in the wild Maremma, restored over 18 years by the Baccheschi-Berti family: nine suites, two infinity pools, 40 hectares of vineyards.
Florentine Carlo and Milanese Aurora Baccheschi-Berti discovered the castle ruins in the 1980s and spent more than a decade restoring it; it opened as a boutique hotel in 2003. Their sons run it now: eldest son Brando oversees the wine, youngest son Corso (a Lausanne-trained hotelier) the front of house, with Neri also part of the family business. The kitchen pulls from the estate's organic gardens, and the whole property is still very much a working farm. Suites, each restored individually with antiques the family collected on travels, plus the separate private Villa La Vedetta. Two infinity pools facing the rolling Maremma hills. Remote: Siena's an hour, Pienza an hour and a half.
