The David is over five metres tall, carved from a single block of Carrara marble. The four unfinished Prisoners in the gallery leading up to it are almost as interesting: Michelangelo left them half-emerged from the stone, and no one has fully explained why. Forty-five minutes inside is enough; book ahead or queue an hour.
